A new multifunctional complex has been built at Haspelsestraat and Rijksweg Noord in Sittard, giving the entire city centre a new lease of life. The new complex plays a key role in the ‘Zitterd Revisited’ project and has made a significant contribution to the development of Sittard into a regional urban centre. This project focuses on education, culture, shopping and the catering and hospitality industry. It enables Nophadrain to showcase its diversity when it comes to the use of green roofs and roof decks.
Green roofs
A portion of the buildings will be fitted with green roof systems (1,100 m² in extensive systems, 700 m² in intensive systems). The two main systems that will be used are the Nophadrain Extensive Green Roof System and the Nophadrain Intensive Roof System.
In addition, the Nophadrain Podium Deck System and the Nophadrain Parking Deck System will be used in this project. In fact, there is an underground car park with 380 parking spaces beneath the new multifunctional complex. The roof of this car park will be fitted with Nophadrain roof systems that can be walked and driven upon. That means that whenever you walk across the square, you will actually be walking on the roof of the car park. One section of the roof is even accessible for freight traffic. This project is a fine example of the use of space in stacked structures.
Choosing the right drainage system for your roof deck
Intensive/extensive green roof: Not only do green roofs have an aesthetic value and increase the amount of space available for use but they also improve the urban living environment. Green roofs help reduce the sewage burden, as they retain water and ensure that excess water is drained slowly. They also counteract the urban heat island effect. The vegetation vaporizes the rainwater, which has a cooling effect.
Roof deck/rooftop car park: Whenever rainwater/precipitation falls on the roof, it can damage the pavement or, worse still, the roof covering system, which is far from ideal. ND Drainage Systems, which are at the heart of the ND Roof Deck Systems used in this project, effortlessly drain excess rainwater from the roof. Thanks to the high compressive strength of ND Drainage Systems, drainage capacity is guaranteed. In addition, the systems protect the roof covering from static and dynamic loading caused by such factors as pedestrians and freight traffic.
